Adelaide in Pictures 3: Junktion

In my pursuit of a place to join the Knitting in Public Week, I came upon this little gem of a shop in Marion.

Junktion is more than a shop though, it's a place where people meet, drink coffee, shop, share with the community and make friends.

The proprietor is a lovely woman called Pixi, who welcomed me into her shop like an old friend.

She describes Junktion as a Non profit Recycle store, but it feels more like a treasure trove filled with lots of clothes, household items, some furniture, books, lots of hand made stuff and... food.

The shop is delightfully decorated with all sorts of knitted and crocheted things to celebrate not only KIP-week but also International Yarnbombing Day which just happened to be this past week.

I went there to knit, but we talked so much, that between all the chatting and browsing, I didn't do any knitting!

I will have to go back for that...

Chocol'Art: Art, Movies and Chocolat

Chocolates and Movies

The big project I am working on lately (and which is keeping from doing much else) 

looks like this:

I am participating in the Chocol'Art - At the Movies art event 

which takes place in Dubai on 30 March 2012.

The theme is Chocolates and Movies and includes fashion, jewelry, street art, performance art, graffiti and lots more.  It promises to be a great event.  Al the art work will be auctioned off  in aid of Make a Wish Foundation and Gulf for Good.  

I am making a quilt, depicting the face of Marilyn Monroe (as originally painted by Andy Warhol). It is mainly made up of fabric but some of the hair and the eye make-up is made from chocolate wrappers.

I have just finished the top layer of the quilt.  It measures 2m x 2m.  This week I have to layer it and do the actual quilt stitching.  I am quilting by hand...

The back of the quilt layer.  See how the chocolate papers are backed with iron-on interfacing to make it a bit stronger.

So far so good...

Marilyn Monroe and Chocolates

I'm working on a project which includes Marilyn Monroe and lots of chocolate wrappers.

But not the chocolates.  Those are sitting in a big plastic container on my desk.  

They bother my children.

The project also involves fabric.  Lots of fabric.

Craftland's Breast Cancer Support Sewathon

 I took part in the Breast Cancer Awareness Sew-a-Thon, organized by Craft Land this weekend.

As part of Breast Cancer awareness month this October, Craft Land, the local sewing-quilting-embroidery-yarn-shop-and-community, organized a 24-hour sew-a-thon where volunteers made support cushions and bags for women undergoing mastectomies and breast cancer surgery. 

 It will form part of a care-pack, put together by Well Woman Clinic which will be handed out to the women after surgery.

Women from all different backgrounds and nationalities took part, and it was a great honor to be surrounded by these wonderful women.
